Bio-K+ Pharma formed a scientific advisory committee composed of six highly skilled researchers who advises the company' on the research activities. These internationally renowned researchers take part in all of the company's scientific decisions.
Dr Pavel Hamet, M.D., Ph.D., C.S.P.Q., F.R.C.P. (C), F.C.A.H.S.
President of the Scientific Advisory Committee

Dr Pavel Hamet has a PhD in experimental medicine from McGill University. He is a licensed endocrinology specialist in Quebec (CSPQ) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada since 1984. He has been the Scientific Advisory Committee's President since 2000.

Dr Hamet works at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM) where he was past Director of Research from 1996 to 2006. He is Chief of Genetic Medicine Services, a member of Endocrinology Services and Director of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine. He is also a tenured Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal.

In addition, Dr Hamet is the author and co-author of over 400 scientific publications and holds several international patents. He serves on many national and international boards including the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

In 1996, Dr Hamet received the Distinguished Scientist Award from The Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society's Achievement Award. In January 2000, he was awarded the Medal of Excellence in Medicine for the twentieth anniversary of the Journal L'Actualité médicale. The Quebec Government paid homage to Dr Hamet in 2001 when he was awarded its most prestigious honour in medicine, the Wilder-Penfield award.
Dr Serge Carrière, O.C., M.D., F.R.C.P. (C)

Dr Serge Carrière is a specialist in internal medicine and nephrology and former dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Université de Montréal (1989 to 1995).He has held several prestigious positions within the medical community.

A magna cum laude graduate of Université de Montréal, Dr Serge Carrière was initially a Harvard University Research Fellow. Then from 1964 to 1988, he occupied various positions such as Professor, Director of the Department of Physiology and Director of the Department of Medicine at Université de Montréal before being named Dean in 1989.

Thereafter, Dr Carrière was employed by Servier as Scientific Director for North America, after having occupied the positions of Vice-president of Clinical Research, and President and COO of Phoenix International Life Sciences Inc..

Dr Carrière is a member of several prominent medical and scientific associations and has received numerous awards and honourable mentions. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1998.
Dr François-Marie Luquet, Dr ès sciences
Vice-president, Research

DrLuquet is an internationally renowned expert in the field of lactic bacteria. He has a doctorate ès science (microbiology) from the Université de Caen in France.

Having studied dietetics, food bacteriology and industrial engineering, Dr Luquet is the author of more than 200 scientific publications and technological works. Among his more recent publications, are two reports entitled « Bactéries lactiques et probiotiques » and « Use of Lactic Bacteria in Fresh Dairy Products and Probiotic Effects ».

Dr Luquet was Director of the Danone Group's Research Centre and, for several years, was also Director of Development and Industrial Marketing for TRANSIA; a division of the Mérieux Group, Furthermore, Dr Luquet was Professor of Dairy Technology at École nationale supérieure des industries agricoles et alimentaires (ENSIA).

Dr Luquet also has extensive experience within European research organizations specialized in the dairy field.

Dr Barbara Levine, R.D., Ph.D

Dr Barbara Levine is Co-Director of the Human Nutrition Program at Rockefeller University and Director of the Nutrition Information Center at New York Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Dr Barbara Levine has been a researcher, consultant and nutrition teacher at many of the most prestigious medical institutions in the United States. She is Associate Professor of Nutrition at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Senior Research Associate at the Laboratory of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism at Rockefeller University, and Associate Scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr Levine is the co-author of two books; « Orthopaedic Clinics of North America » and « Nutritional Factors in Hypertension ». She has written and contributed articles and papers for nutritional and medical journals in such publications as The New York Times, USA Today, Vogue and the Wall Street Journal.

Dr Levine has granted many radio interviews, and has also participated in conferences and seminars. She has served as a consultant to the National Institute of Health in the United States.
Khursheed N. Jeejeebhoy, M.D., F.R.C.P. (C), Ph.D.

Gastroenterologist, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Director of Nutrition Support at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Dr Khursheed N. Jeejeebhoyhas achieved an international reputation for his research.

His research in the field of gastroenterology and nutrition, cited in more than 300 publications and peer reviews have earned Dr Jeejeebhoy 21 awards.

His principal areas of interest focus on assessment of nutritional status, particular nutritional requirements in the patient, the interaction between nutrition and disease, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption, and colon cancer.Dr Jeejeebhoy was chosen to receive the « Cuthbertson Lecture Award » by the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Dr Jeejeebhoy is presently leading a project on the effects of nutrients on cytokines and proinflammatory apoptoses for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Jeffrey S. Borer, MD
Scientific Consultant

Dr Jeffrey S. Borer is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University as well as Professor of Radiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the same institution. He is also Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Director of The Howard Gilman Institute for Valvular Heart Diseases of Weill Medical College.

Dr Borer oversees an interdisciplinary program that involves clinical service, teaching and research in cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Borer has received numerous national and international awards due to his participation in editorial boards and standing committees of professional organizations.

Currently, Dr Borer is Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Cardiology magazine (Karger) and serves on the editorial boards of 10 peer-reviewed journals. He wrote or took part in drafting more than 350 articles, books or chapters related to the health field.
